Uddeholm Tyrax ESR

CORROSION RESISTANT PLASTIC MOULD STEEL DESIGNED FOR BEST POLISHABILITY

Uddeholm Tyrax ESR combines best in class toughness, corrosion and wear resistance. This grade was developed for molding of high performance plastics often filled with glass fiber reinforcements and additives like flame retardants. This matrix- based microstructure is designed to achieve a high-gloss surface by only a few polishing steps, dramatically reducing the tool lead time and enabling production of top quality plastic parts. Uddeholm Tyrax ESR can achieve a high hardness ( up to 58 HRC) and is a suitable upgrade from AISI 420 ESR, AISI S7 & AISI 440C.

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • High hardness (Up to 60 HRC, recommended hardness: 55 – 58 HRC)
  • Good ductility and toughness
  • Good wear resistance
  • Excellent polishability

The story behind the name

The story behind the name : Uddeholm Tyrax

Tyr is the god of struggle and victory in old Icelandic writings. He is the son of Odin and is considered the bravest of the gods. In sagas there is a story about the binding of the monstrous wolf Fenrir:

The Norns, the three fates, foretold that Fenrir would be the death of Odin. The gods decided to bind the wolf. They tried to chain him by telling him he would win renown if he could break free.

The first chain was broken easily. The second chain was made twice as thick but Fenrir managed to break even that. The gods were puzzled. They asked help from the dwarfs.

The Dwarfs made a magic fetter smooth as a silk ribbon. It was made of six things: “The sound that cat makes when it moves, a woman’s beard, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and bird’s spittle.”

Fenrir suspected that there was a trick and demanded that one of the gods had to put his hand to Fenrir’s mouth, should they try to trick him.

Tyr was the only one brave enough. When realizing he couldn’t break the magic binding Fenrir bit Tyr’s hand off.

Tyr is the god of struggle and victory as well as a guardian of the legal order. Uddeholm Tyrax is resistant to failure due to corrosion. At the same time, it is easy to polish.
