    Het wordt steeds belangrijker om voor iedere toepassing het juiste gereedschapsstaal te kiezen, aangezien gereedschap aan steeds hogere eisen moet voldoen. Wat zijn die eisen precies? Het gereedschap moet voldoende slijtvast zijn. Het gereedschap moet betrouwbaar zijn en mag niet tekortschieten door voortijdig afschilferen, barsten of plastische vervorming. De beste gereedschapsrendabiliteit, d.w.z. de laagste gereedschapskosten (incl. onderhoud) per geproduceerd onderdeel, is alleen mogelijk als het juiste gereedschapsstaal voor de betreffende toepassing wordt gebruikt.
